John Obi Mikel named Nigeria captain
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been named the new Nigeria captain by coach Samson Siasia.
The 28-year-old is the most experienced member of the Super Eagles’ squad, having won 72 caps for his country since his debut in 2006.
Mikel replaces CSKA Moscow winger Ahmed Musa, who told ESPN he has no qualms about conceding the armband due to the manager’s wishes.
“Mikel is the oldest serving player in the team and it is the right thing for him to have the armband,” he insisted.
“This is just to correct what was done in the past.”
Mikel will lead his country for the first time later this week as Nigeria face two crucial two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt.
The Super Eagles are two points adirft of their rivals in Group G and will be keen to close the gap to Hector Cuper’s side.
