The Official World Golf Rankings have been under intense scrutiny over the last few weeks as three players jockey for the top spot, and it seems Rory McIlroy is so confused about the system he has given up caring.
McIlroy re-claimed the top spot last week, despite not playing at The Barclays, and Jason Day won his second straight start.
This week, McIlroy is likely to lose his top spot to Jordan Spieth - despite the fact the American missed his second straight cut - unless Day wins and claims the top spot.
That mess has McIlroy, also competing at the Deutsche Bank Championship, confused.
“It’s a mathematical system with algorithms and all sorts of different things,” McIlroy said, via Golf Channel, after shooting an even-par 71 that left him in 64th place.
“I think everyone knows who the best player in the world is right now just based on current form, but it is what it is. It’s not something I really worry about.”
The rankings take into account every tournament a player has played during a two-year stretch.
Right now, McIlroy is strengthened by his superb form from last season, whereas Day has not consistently been at the top during that time.
In fact, Day was ranked 10th in June and had just missed the cut at The Memorial and The Players.
It is easy to watch him now and say he is the best player, but overall, McIlroy and Spieth have been more consistent in this two-year period.
