TENNIS: No retirement plans for Nadal

paniard Rafael Nadal has no plans to retire anytime soon, hopeful of competing at the 2020 Olympics.

The world number five is his nation’s flag bearer at Rio 2016, having overcome concerns over a wrist injury to compete.

Nadal, a 14-time grand-slam champion, may be 30, but he wants to extend his career for a few years yet.

Asked if he planned to compete in Tokyo, Nadal said: “I hope so.”

Nadal said he was “proud” to be given the chance to lead Spain out at the Maracana Stadium.

As for his performances on-court, he hopes he is near his best, planning to play the singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

“Well, I’m going to compete in everything and try my best,” Nadal said.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Winner of the men’s singles in Beijing in 2008, Nadal takes on Argentinian Federico Delbonis in the first round in Brazil.
