Bowman signs four-year contract extension with 49ers

San Francisco 49ers Pro-Bowl linebacker NaVorro Bowman has signed a four-year contract extension.

Bowman - A Pro-Bowler in 2012, 2013 and 2015 - had three years remaining on his contract but he will now stay with the NFL franchise through to the 2022 season.

The 28-year-old - a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2010 - inked a five-year extension worth $45.25million in 2012. His new deal will reportedly pay him $44m from 2019-22 with $20m guaranteed.

“I want to thank Jed, the York family and Trent for giving me the opportunity to continue my career where my heart is,” said Bowman. “I appreciate the hard work that Drew and Paraag put in to getting this deal done.

“My team-mates and coaches have meant so much to me throughout my career and I thank them for helping me become the player I am today. The support I’ve received from my family and friends throughout my life, especially through the adversity of the past few years, has meant so much to me.

“I can’t wait for the season to start and play in front of the best fans in the NFL.”

Bowman missed the entire 2014 season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the 2013 NFC Championship game.

He came back to lead the NFL with 154 tackles last season. Bowman has had at least 140 tackles in his last four NFL seasons.
