Roger Federer eases past Steve Johnson to book a quarter-final place

Roger Federer is on course to win his eighth Wimbledon title after progressing into the quarter-finals with a straightforward victory over Steve Johnson.

The third seed will now face 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic for a place in the last four, having eased past his opponent 6-2 6-3 7-5 on Centre Court.

Federer was close to his best as he avoided an upset of a similar magnitude to the one suffered by tournament favourite Novak Djokovic at the hands of Sam Querry on Saturday.

A break of serve in the sixth and eighth games of the first set put the Swiss on top, with the momentum continuing as the contest developed.

Federer did see his serve percentage drop somewhat in the second set, but he was able to break Johnson in the fourth game to comfortably see things through.

Johnson’s best moment arrived in the final set when breaking Federer’s serve in the fourth game, only for his opponent to hit back instantly to regain control as he cruised into the quarters.
